HOW’S YOUR THOUGHT LIFE?* (by Janine Mick Wills)
I’m sure you’ve heard the expression “Garbage in – garbage out”? The Bible puts it this way:
Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
This holds true for our thought life. When we feed our minds with the “junk” of this world, our spiritual indigestion will be great. We must guard what goes in our minds, so what comes out in the way of our attitude, words, and manner of living exhibits Christ-likeness and glorifies God.
Here are some “thoughts” that might help!
An impure thought life is at enmity against God. I don’t want to be the enemy of God. Do you?
Romans 8:6-8 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Impure thoughts lead to impure deeds. You many think no one knows what’s going on inside your head, but you’re wrong. God knows, and those things have a way of manifesting themselves for all to see.
Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. (This holds true for women as well, which is why we need to be careful about the books and magazines we read and the television shows we watch. A small flame can easily turn into a raging fire.)
James 1:14, 15 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. (Sin starts out small and then progresses. Stop it in the temptation stage.)
A Christian can have victory over her thought life through the Word of God.
Matthew 4:1-10 (Christ’s temptation in the wilderness.)
Psalm 119:9, 11 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (These are promises of God. Claim them!)
The flesh is weak, so Christian must make a strong effort to control her thought life.
Matthew 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Romans 12:1, 2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
2 Corinthians 10:5, 6 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 5:8, 9 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Think on godly things.
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
A pure thought life leads to a life full of peace in God.
Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
Galatians 6:8b …he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
Singing is a manifestation of a heart right with God.
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
So, if you’re not already doing it, start thinking “Good things in – good things out” and see what a difference it will make!
