WHAT DOES GOD SAY ABOUT PARENTING? (by Janine Mick Wills)

Have you ever wondered what God says about parenting?

With so much information in so many forms now-a-days, it could get confusing. But God’s Word never changes (Psalm 119:89). Thus, it is the perfect authority on all matters, including parenting. So, let’s see what God says!

The following has been modified from a counseling project I completed while attending Ambassador Baptist College1.

One of God’s commands to Adam and Eve was to have children.

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

The Lord’s blessing are upon the family.

One of God’s commands to Noah and his family after the flood was to have children.

Genesis 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

Children are the Lord’s portion to parents.

Psalm 127: 3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

Psalm 127:5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them (children).

God has a certain “formula” for the raising of children.

Ephesians 6: 4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Hebrews 12:7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

Parenting can be an enjoyable, rewarding, and God-honoring experience if biblical principles are followed.

1 Samuel 3:13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not (The antithesis being true as well).

Proverbs 10:1 A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Live a consistent and godly life before your children.

Children will accept and use biblical principles if they see them consistently used in the lives of their parents.

Proverbs 20:7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

Proverbs 31:28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Children are to be taught the word of God.

Deuteronomy 6:6, 7 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Psalm 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

Proverbs 6:20 My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother.

CHILDREN MUST BE DIRECTED FROM BIRTH TO ADULTHOOD IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS

  1. Scriptural service to God

1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

  1. How to be a biblical mate

Titus 4, 5 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

  1. Submission to authority

Colossians 3:18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

Hebrews 13:17a Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

1 Peter 2:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme.

  1. Control of emotions

Proverbs 17:32 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

Proverbs 25:28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

1 Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you.

  1. To know and exercise biblical love
love tic-tac-toe
Teach your children how to love biblically.

1 John 1

1 Corinthians 13

  1. Fulfillment of responsibilities

1 Thessalonians 2:9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

1 Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you.

2 Thessalonians. 3:11, 12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

  1. Attitudes toward materialism and morality

Matthew 6:19-21 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God.

THE END RESULTS OF REARING GODLY CHILDREN

What you put in is what you get out. The same if true with parenting.

Put good stuff in and good stuff will come out!

Deuteronomy 11:21 That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.
